The theme for the 2011-2012 Cheltenham Sports Basketball season is “It Takes a Team!” Youth sports provide perhaps the best opportunities our young people have to learn how to work together toward a common goal. We teach enduring values of hard work, determination, overcoming adversity, and teamwork.

Each year more than 175 players from grades Kindergarten through eighth grade, from Cheltenham Township and surrounding communities, participate in our intramural program. Another group of more than 40 players participate in the Intra-County Basketball Association Travel League. Regardless of previous experience or skill level, our program’s message is the same – each player has an important contribution to make, and our team is most successful when we all do our best. As our league continues to grow, our registration fees are inadequate to cover increasing league costs.

This afternoon, while I basking in the glow of my Twitter feed, mostly because of yet another stellar performance by my #FightinPhils, one simple, yet powerful tweet burned through my retinas and into my soul.  It was by beloved CBS Sports golf analyst and commentator Peter Kostis @peterjkostis , and consisted of two words and less than ten percent of Twitter’s allotted characters: : “Fuck off!!”.  Wow, if I wanted that information, I would follow my ex-wife!

You can vote for MLS players NOT included on the fan ballot via Twitter between June 17-20. Simply include the player’s Twitter handle (i.e. @carlosvaldes5 or @sheanonwilliams), OR an MLS player’s full name with no space between first and last (i.e. carlosvaldes or sheanonwilliams) AND @MLS along with #MLSAllStar in a Tweet to cast your vote.

Winning Bids Will Play with Honored Guests – Bill Raftery or Sid MacLeod!

Philadelphia, PA – The Friends of Bill Raftery Golf Outing to support La Salle University men’s basketball will tee off on Monday, June 20^th at North Hills Country Club.  However, the 9^th annual edition of the popular event will have an added twist.

This year participants are invited to bid on the privilege of playing with the outing’s namesake Bill Raftery ’63 or this year’s honored guest – the great Sid MacLeod.  Threesomes can bid to have Bill or Sid round out their group by emailing ExplorerClub@lasalle.edu or calling 215 951-1545.

Raftery is widely recognized as one of the finest color analysts in college basketball through his television work on ABC, CBS and ESPN and radio duties with Westwood One.  Raftery just completed his latest assignment covering the Final Four with John Thompson in Houston.

MacLeod has become known as one of the most recognizable and beloved fixtures in the La Salle community through over 50 years of service as a professor in the Communication and English Departments at the University.
